U-3ARC at Seafood 4 Africa 2024 in Dakhla

At Seafood 2024, which has just ended in Dakhla, Morocco, the focus was on improving the governance of fisheries and aquaculture products in Africa. At this African Forum for the Fisheries and Aquaculture Industry, which had plenary sessions, exhibitions, etc. on the agenda, it was constantly argued that Africa's potential in the blue economy remains immense. For example, in 2022, the continent produced 12.5 million tonnes of fishery products, but consumes 13 million tonnes per year... hence a significant import deficit. Of course, a good portion of the catch is exported, often in its raw state, but there is still a significant quantity in waste. These losses are mainly due, according to Mr. Saïd El Harch, VP of U-3ARC, to a cold chain defect, particularly in African countries south of the Sahara. This deficiency in conservation and processing is the cause of losses that amount to 70% of the catch and prevents the generation of quality and income, he added.

Along the same lines, President of FENIP, Mr. Hassan Sentissi Idrissi, argued that African countries would benefit from opting for the choice of valorization to take advantage of this blue economy.

By developing the RAC sector, which is far from being a luxury, Africa can further enhance the value of its fisheries resources. Let us bet that the U-3ARC’s advocacy will resonate with the executives of countries that are still lagging behind.
