Cameroon benefits from high rainfall (4m annually at Kribi station) and has rich soil suitable for growing cassava. This tuber is a commodity that is highly prized and passed down through generations. Harvests can be abundant. Without conservation, losses are often significant and value is lower.
Cameroon is counting on the APFCC for conservation solutions, we learned. The opportunity was found during the 1st International Cassava Festival, currently underway from November 11 to 16, 2024 in Douala, and which is sponsored by the Cameroonian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Alain Dja Nsob Ndjeudji Tchoua, President of the APFCC and who has just been elected Deputy Secretary General of the Executive Bureau of the U-3ARC during the General Assembly of the Pan-African Union in Tunis, highlighted the fact that the RAC (Refrigeration and Air Conditioning) sector is at the heart of the economy. Precisely, a series of solutions for the conservation of cassava crops was presented by the APFCC to the authorities, operators and journalists to serve as a relay for a wider dissemination. Even if more details on the conservation methods have not been specified, the approach remains no less important and lays the foundations for the beginnings of a greater consideration of this thorn in Africa, post-harvest losses.
